Performance of deep learning object detection technology in the detection and diagnosis of maxillary sinus lesions on panoramic radiographs

Objective: The first objective of this study was to determine the performance of detection techniques in-depth learning objects in the detection of the maxillary sinus in panoramic radiographs. The second objective is to clarify the classification performance of the maxillary sinus lesions compared to healthy maxillary sinus.


Methods:
Data imaging for the maxillary sinuses healthy (587 sinus, Class 0), inflammation of the maxillary sinus (416 sinus, Class 1), cyst area of ​​the maxillary sinus (171 sinus, Class 2) is assigned to the training, testing 1, and testing of two sets of data , A learning process 1000 times with training images and labels is done by using DetectNet and learning model created.

The test 1 and test 2 pictures are applied to the model, and the sensitivity of detection and false positive rate per image is calculated. The accuracy, sensitivity and specificity are determined to differentiate groups of inflammation (Class 1) and cyst group (Class 2) with respect to the healthy group (Class 0).


Results: The sensitivity detection healthy (Class 0) and inflamed (Class 1) the maxillary sinus 100% for both tests 1 and 2 test data sets, while they are 98 and 89% for cysts of the maxillary sinus area (Class 2). false positives per image almost 0:00. Accuracy, sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of maxillary sinusitis is 90-91%, 88-85% and 91-96%, respectively; for cysts of the maxillary sinus area, these values ​​are 97-100%, 80-100%, and 100-100%, respectively.


Conclusion: Much learning can reliably detect and identify the maxillary sinus cysts maxillary sinusitis and maxillary sinus area.
